A local Fire Chief has been honoured by the Canadian Volunteer Fire Services Association (CVFSA).

Nipawin Chief Brian Starkell was named an ambassador for the CVFSA at its most recent meeting in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.

“It was a great honour,” Starkell told northeastNOW. “And I’m looking forward to working with the rest of the board members and committee members.”

Starkell has been part of the CVFSA since 2012, when he received a lifetime achievement award. Last year, he was an ambassador of sorts when the CVFSA hosted firefighters from Japan. He said one thing he wants to accomplish as an ambassador is to promote the association.

“We are a strong group,” Starkell said. “But I think we can always build on that and I think that’s going to be one of the goals I’m looking forward to working with.”

Some of the duties involved in the title is participating in board meetings and other association events, as well as working with the board, and committee members on things that need to be done within the organization.

Starkell is no stranger to being busy. In the Nipawin area, on top of being chief for the past nine years, he has been involved with the Saskatchewan Association of Fire Chiefs as a director of District 10. He has also been an instructor for the Saskatchewan Volunteer Firefighters’ Association, and has been on the CVFSA’s awards committee. Outside of the fire service, Starkell has been a long-term member of the Lions Club in Nipawin and recently received the Melvin Jones Fellowship for humanitarian service award, the highest honour for the Lions. On top of that, he has also been a licensed funeral director since 1988.

“I’d like to thank everybody who sent their congratulations to me, and put their faith in me, into the association,” Starkell said. “So I can help build the fire industry across Canada.”

Starkell’s fire services career began in 1976 in Codette and has now totalled 43 years of service.
