Clinics and clothing drives aim to get Humboldt newcomers accustomed to the winter
As the colder months draw near with autumn about to arrive, one Humboldt group will try to get new residents to its city and province for peak cold weather.
Safe Communities Humboldt and Area (SCHA) hosts winter preparedness clinics and run winter clothing drives to help newcomers in Humboldt to be prepared for snow and extreme cold weather.
Shari Hinz, executive director of SCHA, said they’re accepting donations of clean, gently used winter clothing, accessories, and tools until Oct. 7 at the Humboldt Regional Newcomer Centre.
“There are some of the individuals who are new to our country and province that when they arrive, they don’t have the correct clothing that will keep them warm and protected for our winter months,” Hinz said. “They may not necessarily know what a toque, how thick a winter jacket should be, or what type of boots they should get. That whole education process and being able to provide people with those items that can keep them warm and safe over the winter months when they come from countries that don’t have snow and don’t experience the drastic temperature changes we have.”
