Melfort’s Ken Singer inducted into broadcast hall of fame

Over five decades in the broadcasting industry was honoured on Friday as Ken Singer was inducted into the Saskatchewan Association of Broadcasters Hall of Fame.

Singer began his career in 1967 at CKOM, and ended here in Melfort back in November when he retired. Singer had a 22 year stint at CKCK in Regina between the two as well.

“I am honoured and just very grateful at an amazing 52 years in this business,” Singer said.

Over 25 of his broadcasting years were spent with CJVR in Melfort where he was on-air and then moved into the role of Vice President of Broadcast Operations for FabMar Communications.

Singer was able to oversee the transition from FabMar Communications to the Jim Pattison Broadcast Group (JPBG) leading up to his retirement.

“It was bittersweet because it marked the end of an era but the beginning of an exciting new era for those that are still there,” Singer said.

Station Manager Linda Rheaume was on hand for Singer’s hall of fame induction and said he was more than deserving of the honour.

“I worked with Ken for many years and he was always forward thinking and creative but his best attribute was always his outgoing personality and the wonderful way he mentored, not only myself but all of our staff,” Rheaume said.

The lessons in radio that Singer brought to Rheaume and the Melfort stations are values that still exist on and off the air.

“Ken always promoted that radio is here not just to entertain, but to serve and inform listeners and that local radio is the best radio,” Rheaume said.

Fellow JPBG alumni, Neil Headrick who entertained listeners on 900 CKBI in Prince Albert was also inducted.
