Successful Fuel Good Day in the northeast

The results are in from Co-op’s Fuel Good day around the province.

The day is all about giving back to local charities and community groups through gas sales on Sept. 17.

The six locations for Prairie North Co-op sold about 50,000 liters of gas, where 10 cents of every litre sold is donated back into the community.

General Manager Terry Tremblay said they selected the fish in school program to receive this year’s profits from fuel and smokie on a bun lunches.

“We presented a cheque to the Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation, the Melfort branch which they are going to share within the region – $7,500,” Tremblay said.

He said sales were up by 20 per cent this year at the Prairie North locations which includes Melfort, Archerwill, Kelvington, Naicam, Spalding, and St. Brieux.

The Fish in School program was chosen by the staff at those locations because it has widespread benefits throughout the area.

“[It] gets our kids linked back with stewardship of the environment but also the sporting,” Tremblay said. “It’s also a key part of our local economy and social life around northeast, Saskatchewan and Prairie North training area.”

According to Tremblay, it takes about $1,500 to set up an aquarium to hatch eggs, incubate them and raise them to a point to where they can be released into the lakes.

Tremblay believes with weather conditions being a bit better last year, he believes that helps contribute to a better turnout than last year.

“We are looking forward to next year,” Tremblay said. “I think it is just such a great event and will continue on every September going forward.”

The Midway Co-op was able to donate $697 to the LeRoy Daycare while the Carrot River Co-op raised $1,449 for Kidsport.

Lake Country Co-op brought in $5,354.88 for the Prince Albert SPCA and the Pineland Co-op presented $1,007 to Nipawin Special Olympics, Pineview Lodge and the Choiceland Library.
