Federal candidates set to take questions tonight

The Prince Albert and District Chamber of Commerce is looking to help their members and the area’s voters learn about the candidates standing in the federal election.

This evening at Carlton Comprehensive High School, five of the six candidates looking to be the next member of parliament for Prince Albert will be talking about their party platforms and taking questions.

Chamber CEO Elise Hildebrandt said providing a platform to candidates serves a valuable service.

“I believe it’s important that each of our parties has the right to speak and put forward what they represent,” she said.

So far, incumbent, Conservative Party’s Randy Hoback, Liberal candidate Estelle Hjertaas, the NDP’s Harmony Johnson-Harder and People’s Party of Canada candidate Kelly Day are all set to attend. Brian Littlepine, who is running for the Veterans Coalition Party is also scheduled to be on stage. Paper candidate for the Green Party, Kerri Wall lives in B.C. and is not expected to attend.

The event is slated to get underway at 6:30 p.m. and wrap up at 8:15 p.m. Anyone asking questions at the forum will be asked to submit them in writing. Hildebrandt said the chamber wants answers.

“We’re not there to hear our parties argue with each other, we want to hear what those parties are going to offer to us as Canadians,” she said.

In regards to specific issues, Hildebrandt said the current state of the oil and gas industry has been an issue of concerns for members recently. The chamber CEO thinks she’ll get a better handle of the issues on the minds of membership during the event.

Hildebrandt said they would like people to pre-register for the forum by contacting the chamber.
