Nipawin man set for trial on drug charges, has assault charges withdrawn

A 41-year-old man from Nipawin facing drug charges has a trial date set, but had his other charges withdrawn.

Randy Norman Hamilton appeared in Nipawin Provincial Court on Wednesday, Oct. 9 where his assault charges were stayed.

Crown Prosecutor Patrick Durham said he was prepared to begin trial.

“We believed we had a reasonable likelihood of conviction and it was in the public’s interest to proceed, but we’re constantly re-evaluating [the case],” Durham said. “New information that came to light that morning and that affected my reasonable likelihood of conviction.”

While Hamilton no longer has to deal with assault charges, he is charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking, possession of stolen property under $5,000, and possession of the proceeds of crime.

The drug and theft-related charges stem from June 4, 2019 when Nipawin RCMP seized nearly two pounds of methamphetamine and stolen property from a local business in Nipawin. Police also located other drug paraphernalia and items consistent with drug trafficking.

Hamilton is set for trial on Feb. 3, 2020 in Nipawin court. He was previously denied bail on Oct. 15 and will be remanded until the trial.
