The Town of Carrot River was recently on the receiving end of a provincial award.

Saskatchewan Parks and Recreation Association (SPRA) presented the 2019 Parks and Open Spaces Award to the town for the community square.

Administrator Kevin Trew said the community square is a well used space in the town.

“The square provides opportunities for all sort of different entertainment; it provides area for a farmers’ market, and a bunch of different community events,” Trew said.

The requirements for the award were that it must be in existence for a minimum of one year and demonstrates outstanding and innovative aspects which could have significant impact in the recreation park field.

Initial construction of the square began in 2014 and a covered stage was added in 2018.

“The stage brought the square to a whole new level,” Trew said.

The Co-op Community Spaces provided $50,000 for the construction of the stage as well as donations from community members.

“Geographically, it is right in the middle of Carrot River so it is something that we are very proud of and hope for many years of usage in the future,” Trew said.

The town was contacted in the spring with the news of their nomination and then again in the fall they were informed they won.

“We were very surprised; there are a lot of great parks and open spaces in the province of Saskatchewan,” Trew said. “We were very honoured to be the recipients.”

Trew added the success of the project is thanks to the community members that championed it along with support from the entire region and beyond.
