Middle Lake, Cudworth combined team wins 3A Boys Provincial Gold

A new initiative for Three Lakes School in Middle Lake, and Cudworth school has resulted in a gold medal.

The schools put a combined team together for the high school soccer season and ended up winning the gold medal at the 3A Boys Provincials during the weekend of Oct. 25 and 26.

The co-operative team defeated Pelican Lake 8-0 in the quarter-final on Friday. That was followed by a shootout win later that day over Waldheim. On Saturday, the boys met Duck Lake in the final and defeated the hosts 2-1. Head Coach Amber Broad said it meant a great deal for both schools.

“Cudworth School gets to hang up a banner, and they haven’t hung up one in many years,” Broad told northeastNOW. “And Middle Lake, every year we work really hard. Every year we put up banners and it’s so important for us to be at the top of the athletic chain.”

With it being the first year of the three year co-op, Broad said it took a bit of time for the group to mesh together.

“By the end it was like they played forever together,” she said. “At the beginning it was a little bit of a transition and learning how to talk on the field to each other and positioning and stuff like that. But at the end, it obviously worked, we finished number one.”

Broad said it was amazing to see the growth in the team through the year. She said when they practiced before provincials, it brought a tear to her eye because they knew they were champions.

The Cudworth Middle Lake team was not only a winner on the scoreboard, but Broad said team members got rave reviews about their sportsmanship. She said they got messages from referees about how sportsmanlike they were.

“Sportsmanlike is number one,” Broad said. “That shows the men that they have become, so that was important too.”

The combined team was the first in a three year agreement between the schools. Broad said they had a few graduating players, but she likes the group of young players they have coming and the returnees as well.

Not only will the co-op be a soccer thing, but the schools will combine for a basketball team this year. While the soccer team played out of Cudworth, the basketball team will call Middle Lake their home.

Meanwhile, at the provincial tournaments, there were a few other local teams that had success. St. Brieux finished third in 3A Boys, Humboldt took bronze in 4A Boys, and Middle Lake took silver in 3A Girls.
