Nipawin recruiting new fire chief

Nov 1, 2019 | 3:29 PM

Brian Starkell is no longer the fire chief in Nipawin.

Starkell had been fire chief in the community for nine years.

Nipawin Chief Administrative Officer (CAO) Barry Elliott would not elaborate on the circumstances behind Starkell’s departure.

“We appreciate his years of service, and we certainly wish Brian and his family all the best in the future and Brian particularly in his future endeavours,” Elliott told northeastNOW.

Elliott said Deputy Chief Bruce Pihowich is now interim chief until the town replaces Starkell on a permanent basis. However, it will take some time before that happens.

“Having gone through a lot of recruitment efforts I know it typically it takes in the neighbourhood of two months – and in many cases – more to recruit professionals to their roles,” Elliott said.

The CAO asked everyone to be patient with the process, and assured the community and Nipawin’s neighbours fire services are fully engaged and operational, and they look forward to continue to serve.

In August, Starkell was named an ambassador for the Canadian Volunteer Fire Services Association (CVFSA) at a meeting in Wolfville, Nova Scotia.

Starkell began his fire services career in Codette in 1976.
