Four In a Row

Trojans come back against Blackhawks for fourth win in a row

Nov 1, 2019 | 9:51 AM

The Tisdale Trojans got their fourth win in a row on Thursday, Oct. 31 in Saskatchewan Midget AAA Hockey League (SMAAAHL) action. It was a 6-4 decision on the road against Beardy’s Blackhawks last night.

Things seemed to be smooth sailing for the Trojans as they opened the scoring just over a minute into the game courtesy of their captain Kalen Ukrainetz who fired a wrist shot past Blackhawk netminder Matt Hennessey. However, even with the Trojans seeming to dominate play in the first period, Beardy’s got their chances and capitalized. Holden Doell scored shorthanded halfway through the frame to tie it, then Robert Pizzey made it 2-1 for Beardy’s after one period even with the Trojans outshooting the Blackhawks 17-9.

Just over two minutes into the second period, Beardy’s got a goal to make it 3-1 courtesy of Pizzey again. Tisdale still seemed to have the momentum, but were down two goals. Assistant Coach Daven Smith said even when down 3-1, they still felt that they were the better team.

“We deserved to have a different score when we were down 3-1 for sure,” he said. “But we knew in the dressing room we were going to get a couple more this game for sure, we were putting the pressure on so we weren’t too nervous.”

And get a couple more they did as with less than five minutes to play, Carter Briltz finished off a nice odd man rush to make it 3-2, then just over a minute later, Noah Wills one-timed a shot off a faceoff to tie it 3-3 shorthanded and all of a sudden, things were tied heading into the third period.

The scoring didn’t happen in the third until late, but both teams did have their chances. Carter Briltz finished off a nice passing play with about six minutes to play to give Tisdale the 4-3 lead, Kalen Ukrainetz made it 5-3 with a minute and a half left and the Trojans seemed like they had it. However, Beardy’s had something to say about it as Aaron Lorenz made it 5-4 with less than a minute to play.

The Blackhawks called a timeout and pulled their goalie, but Mackenzie Carson worked the puck out and was able to fight off a few checks before firing the puck into the empty cage to make it 6-4 with 37 seconds left, which was ultimately the dagger. Smith said they knew the offence would come at some point.

“We were never really worried,” Smith told northeastNOW. “The boys were working the cycle down low pretty good. Below the goal line tonight was kind of our strong area, working the long cycle side to side.”

Tisdale improves to 6-6-0-1 on the year and are back in action on Saturday, Nov. 2 when the Regina Pat Canadians come to the RecPlex.
