Snow Clearing Reminders

City of Melfort issuing reminders about snow removal

Nov 2, 2019 | 9:00 AM

The City of Melfort is issuing a reminder about snow removal in the community.

Director of Development, Planning and Community Relations, Brent Lutz said homeowners need to keep their snow on their own property.

“When snow falls on your property…you need to make sure if you’re removing it from your sidewalk or your driveway that you do not place that on the public streets, because that can become a safety issue,” said Lutz. “Your snow belongs to you, and you’re supposed to keep it on your property.”

He said the snow should be kept on lawns or elsewhere on your property, and not be shovelled onto streets or lanes.

Lutz said business owners also have a responsibility for the snow in front of their property.

“They’re responsible to keep the sidewalks adjacent to their business clear and free of snow and ice,” said Lutz. “The current bylaw provides that they need to have that removed within 24 hours of a snowfall.”

City staff monitor local businesses to ensure that the sidewalks are safe for the public, and Lutz said business owners will likely hear from the city if they fail to keep the sidewalks clear of ice and snow.
