Donating purses for a good cause

Nov 3, 2019 | 8:00 AM

For the third year in a row, Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) in Melfort is holding a purse auction.

Lightly used purses are donated to the organization and then placed into a silent auction table at the North East SPCA trade show.

Kathryn Carswell with BBBS said fundraisers like this are essential to their programming.

“It costs about $1500 a year to maintain a match, so hopefully we can raise enough funds to maintain one match through this initiative,” Carswell said.

According to Carswell, the purse auction has been a big success in the past with about 100 purses being donated.

“People are very generous and we usually get a really good response from the community, ” Carswell said. “This fundraiser is up there with our big foot campaign.”

A $5 cash and carry rack is also set up for those purses that are maybe a bit more dated then others.

There are still eight littles on the waiting list to be paired with a big brother or big sister. Visit the BBBS website for more information on mentoring or to apply to become a mentor.

Donations of purses can be dropped off at the BBBS office until Nov. 8. The NESPCA fall into winter trade fair then takes place at the Kerry Vickar Center on Nov. 9 from 10 a.m to 4 p.m.
