Naicam getting set for Dancing with the Stars

Locals of the Northeast have been training and lacing up their dancing shoes for the past two months in preparation for Dancing with the Stars, Naicam edition.

The third event put on by North East Outreach and Support Services (NEOSS) will be held at the Naicam school gym Nov. 23.

Louise Schweitzer with NEOSS said this is their fourth winter gala event, but the third time they have hosted dancing with the Stars.

“It has become one of our major fundraisers and it’s the community of Naicam really who put this on for their community,” Schweitzer said.

She added this event is no small feat for the participants in the dancing competition.

“They put in hours and hours of training and dance lessons to put on an amazing performance for you,” she explained.

Participants began their dance lessons with choreographer Chisa Glendenning back in September.

“They start on a weekly-basis and once they get into November they train two times a week,” Schweitzer said. “They donate their time to come forward to learn the dance moves and to put the costumes together to entertain the crowd.”

The competitors for season three in the couple category are Skyler and Hunter Hutchison, Angie and Jeremy Rolheiser, Mackenzie Wilson-Anderson and Todd Anderson, Trevor McIntyre and Jodi Sowa. A group of six women consisting of Brianna Nelson, Terrilyn Nelson, Stephanie Anderson, Shelley Peterson, Tara Ullidal, and Jodi Lee are also participating.

The dancers can win themselves a trophy by collecting the most pledges prior to the event or by being selected as ‘fans choice’ or ‘judges’ choice.’

Schweitzer referred to the winter gala as a ‘top notch event for the area,’ and there were a couple of places that have already booked the event as their staff Christmas party.

“It’s a great way to get together with colleagues and friends before the Christmas season bombards us and pulls us in many different directions,” Schweitzer said.

Tickets can be purchased through any one of the four couples or group of six women in the competition, or at Croppers Motors in Naicam, Naicam town office, or the NEOSS main office in Melfort. A total of 250 tickets are sold and as of Friday only 45 were left.

There will be silent auction items on hand as well as a WestJet draw. All the funds raised through the event go back into the NEOSS and the programs it operates including the women’s shelter in Melfort.
