Crokicurl to open next Friday with special guests

For the second winter season, crokicurl will be set up in Memorial Garden in Melfort.

A special kick-off party is slated for next Friday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. for the winter sport that combines the board game of crokinole and curling.

Recreation programmer with the CIty of Melfort, Shannon Marshall said the event will be even bigger and better than last years.

The kick-off nicely fits in with the arrival of special guests that will be in the city ahead of the Canadian Country Christmas tour concert at the Kerry Vickar Centre.

“The artists that are singing that night at the concert are going to make an appearance that day and want to be full participants,” Marshall said.

The Canadian Country Christmas tour show takes place at 7 p.m. featuring Sean Hogan, Duane Steele, Adam Gregory, Thomas Wade and Darlene Tuleta.

Marshall hinted the gazebo next to the rink would be great spot for the artists to entertain participants with some bonfire songs.

There will also be hot chocolate, treats, a bonfire, as well as a ticket giveaway for the show that evening.

“Whoever shows up to participate or even to just check out the event that day can enter to win the draw,” Marshall said.

There will also be a crokinole board given away that day as well.

The return of crokicurl comes after a successful first year for the game in the city.

“It was such great response, we had people travel in from out of town to check this out so we want that many plus more back again,” Marshall said.

Once crokicurl opens on Friday, it will be open for the season over 12 weeks. The hours will be the same as the Northern Lights Palace Pool which is where score sheets can be picked up.

“It’s a great feature especially around Christmas time when you can check out the Christmas Castle across the street at the Historic Post Office and come play a game of crokicurl,” Marshall said.

Crokicurl is a game for the whole family, or can also be used as a staff activity or to get a group friends together.

“We also have new crokicurl rocks this year, they are freshly built but I’m not going to say what they are,” Marshall said. “They give a nod to another great Canadian winter sport so you gotta come check them out.”

Memorial Garden is already all decked out in Christmas decorations and ready for the holiday season according to Marshall.

“It’s a great atmosphere and a great experience for absolutely anyone,” she said.
