CP Holiday Train stopping in Wynyard

The food bank in Wynyard is getting some help with donations from the Canadian Pacific Holiday Train next Wednesday.

The train will roll in to the community at 4:15 p.m. with performances by Scott Helman and Madeline Merlo.

Over $15.8 million and 4.5 million pounds of food was brought in over the last 21 years according to Communications Advisor Mallory McCredie.

“In each stop we partner with a local food bank and they will be on site to accept any donations whether that is cash or food,” McCredie said. “They distribute it to the community as they see fit.”

There are two trains that each start in Montreal. One travels through Canada and one goes through the northern half of the United States.

“It’s such a great way for us to show appreciation for all of these small towns in which we operate,” McCredie said. “We have employees all across our network and so this is a great touch base for us to stop in, put on a show and help people in need.”

Food bank representatives will be on hand at each stop to collect food and cash donations.

“People who come out to the shows and to see the train know that what they are donating is being put to use in their own community,” McCredie said.

McCredie added this is a fun way to get into the holidays while giving back to the community.

The ‘CP has heart program’ focuses on cardiovascular health which encourages items that have good nutritional value.

“We ask people to be conscious of what they are donating in order to provide the most value to the people in need,” McCredie said.

The holiday train travels with all of the lights on when it rolls to each community. The train comes to a stop with the stage door dropping down, and the performance immediately getting underway.

CP representatives will then invite food bank and town representatives up on stage to accept a donation on behalf of CP. The performance continues thereafter until the train needs to get on its way to the next destination.

“I think its a really exciting train, it’s going to be very high energy music,” McCredie said.

Prior to the stop in Wynyard, the train will also stop in Foam Lake from 2:55 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.

The train will head to Saskatoon after departing from Wynyard at 5 p.m. and is set to arrive at 8:35 p.m. at the CP overpass on Seventh Avenue North.
