Nipawin Salvation Army seeking volunteers during kettle campaign

Nov 29, 2019 | 12:19 PM

The Nipawin Salvation Army is making a call for volunteers to sit at Christmas kettles.

Kettles went out Nov. 28 around Nipawin at No Frills, Save U IGA and Pineland C-oop grocery store.

Community Services Director Sheri Fengstad said they are seeking all types of volunteers and are hoping that youth will help out as well.

“They can volunteer and go online and track hours for prizes,” Fengstad said. “Its just an incentive to get the youth out volunteering at kettles.”

With the three locations for the kettles, Fengstad said they have a lot of shifts to fill over the next month. Earlier shifts have been filled but they hope more sign up into December up to Christmas Eve.

“We are looking for someone who has a couple of hours to spare to sit there,” Fengstad said. “Volunteers are asked to never leave the kettle unattended.”

The money raised at kettles go to Christmas hampers and funding for the Nipawin Food Bank for the rest of the year.

“The last couple of years we haven’t quite reached our goal so that has made our budget a little bit smaller, but most years people are very generous,” Fengstad said.

Last year, 144 hampers were distributed in the Nipawin area.

The other way to help the army at this time of year is to make donations for the Christmas hampers.

“We are always low on toys actually so we are looking for children and baby toys,” Fengstad said.

A toy drive is underway at the Nipawin Bargain Shop as well for drop-offs.

Fengstad said toys for infants until age four are usually in low supply as are boys’ toys for ages 10 to 12.

“We appreciate everyone that volunteers or collects food or toys at Christmas parties. The generosity helps us to give everyone a happy Christmas,” Fengstad said.

Food and toy donations should be in by Dec. 16 to be included in Christmas hampers and monetary donations will be accepted right up until Christmas.
