Highway 55 bridge project in final stages

Dec 3, 2019 | 4:28 PM

The Highway 55 bridge rehabilitation project is inching closer to completion.

The $8 million project that was headed by the engineering firm Stantec was originally slated to be complete this fall.

However, Nipawin Chief Administrative Officer Barry Elliott said the work is nearly finished.

“[Stantec is] set to set the date to lift all the restrictions by the end of this coming weekend,” Elliott said. “Once they lift the restrictions, we will be informed and we will share that information with our usual distribution list.”

The final inspection of the bridge will take place Wednesday, Dec. 4.

“I understand that as part of the inspection, all parties walk along the bridge to inspect the work done,” Elliott said.

There may be a lane closed during that time, but Elliott said there will be flaggers and traffic lights on hand to direct the traffic.

He said the project will make a major impact in the region.

“It is a major traffic corridor through this area of the province, so that bridge is of critical importance,” he said.

Steve Shaheen with the Ministry of Highways told northeastNOW in July the work involved replacing bearings in the west four spans of the bridge, the joints on top of the deck, and the asphalt driving surface.
