Lake Lenore Fish Smoker set for another year

A big tradition in Lake Lenore is back for another year.

The annual Fish Smoker takes place on Saturday at the Lake Lenore Hall.

The event was started when the Lake Lenore hotel owner began the smoker, but when it became a bit too much for him, the Lake Lenore Wildlife Federation took it over and has been running it for over 10 years.

The fish for the smoker comes from Lake Lenore as they are netted in December.

“Fish are caught,” Wildlife Federation member Tim Prodahl said. “The Wildlife Federation members clean, process, and get the fish filets ready to be smoked on the day of the smoker.”

Anyone is encouraged to come to the Lake Lenore Hall for the event. There’s no cost to enjoy the fish, but there are refreshments available for purchase.

Later in the day, there will be some evening entertainment for a small cover charge. The event is adults-only (18-plus).

Prodahl said from start to finish, the event really brings the community together.

“The netting, the cleaning, the fileting, the smoking, and then the enjoying of the fish and some refreshments,” he said. “It’s really quite a unique event that everybody looks forward to.”

The event is also somewhat of a pre-cursor for the Lake Lenore Annual Fish Derby that is in its 11th year and takes place on Saturday, Jan. 18. It is put on by the Lake Lenore Lion’s Club.
