Saskatchewan sets daily record for natural gas consumption: SaskEnergy

Jan 16, 2020 | 2:13 PM

It’s no secret that Saskatchewan is cold right now, but we can now start calling it ‘historically cold.’

In a media release Thursday, SaskEnergy said the province set a daily record Wednesday of 1.56 PetaJoules (PJ) of natural gas consumed.

The previous daily record of 1.50 PJ was set in December 2018, then tied in February 2019.

SaskEnergy said that record was broken Monday, at 1.53 PJ. On Tuesday, Saskatchewan got to 1.54 PJ.

The Crown corporation said the record is due to high consumption from residential, business and industrial customers. It said these record-setting days are happening more frequently because of customer growth.

The gas consumption numbers are tracked over a 24-hour period from 9 a.m. to 9 a.m. daily.

A PetaJoule is equal to one million GigaJoules (GJ). The average home in Saskatchewan consumes about 100 GJ of natural gas each year.
