Coat donation from community group helps keep students warm

A pair of Prince Albert area schools have received donations to help students.

Last week the Knights of Columbus in St. Louis delivered coats to Osborne Public School along with St. Louis Community School. Each received 12 coats.

Rene Gaudet, grand knight for council 6755 for the Knights of Columbus in St. Louis, said the schools are now handing out the donations.

“They’re still identifying kids that still need jackets,” he said.

Gaudet said the organization was able to buy the coats through the Knights of Columbus charitable foundation. Handing out coats to kids in need has been a longtime practice for the St. Louis-based group, he said.

Greg Walker, principal at Osborne Public School, said he welcomes the donation, adding it goes to show how the community supports the school in many ways.

“We are just so thankful, as a school obviously we’re funded to provide the educational services that we do, but for some of these extra things we certainly count on our community,” he said.

Walker said they have handed out some of the coats to kids who need them. The school did have some extra ones left over and are keeping them on hand so they can be available if students need them.

Since the coats were handed out to students last week, Walker said the kids who received jackets have been wearing them to school and were happy to get them.

“Big smiles on their faces when we distributed the coats and they’ve certainly been wearing them,” he said.
