Humboldt and District Museum hosting open house during Archives Week

Jan 30, 2020 | 10:05 AM

Residents of Humboldt and area have an opportunity to learn more about the history of the region.

The Humboldt and District Museum is hosting a Saskatchewan Archives Week Open House Thursday, Feb. 6.

“The Saskatchewan Archives week is really an opportunity to acknowledge and look at how important those archival documents are to the history of our communities in Saskatchewan,” Director of Cultural Services with the City of Humboldt Jennifer Fitzpatrick told northeastNOW.

The museum will feature archival photos focused on scenes at the lake around the Humboldt area during the event. It will centre on the years between 1910 and the 1990s.

“We’ve got a great photo of a young person out at the lake in 1937, and they’re dressed in what appears to be almost a little suit and tie, it’s really quite a fantastic photo,” Fitzpatrick said.

Cake and refreshments will also be served at the event.

Fitzpatrick said one of the best ways to do research is asking the community to identify people.

“We’ve put out some photos, we’re asking people if they were at that specific event or if they remember being out there, just to share the history that they know with us because that’s really important that we capture that history,” Fitzpatrick said.

Residents are encouraged to come in during the open house, but Fitzpatrick said they are welcome any time to share their stories and the history of the area.

The Humboldt and District Museum has been part of the Saskatchewan Council of Archives and Archivists for many years, and Fitzpatrick said they have helped the museum in funding large archival projects. She called the council a really important organization within the province.

Saskatchewan Archives Week runs from Feb. 2 to 8.
