Revenue and Expenses down for Mustangs in 2025/26

The Melfort Mustangs held their Annual General Meeting (AGM) Tuesday night, as the club’s financials for the past year were reviewed.

Overall, the organization remained in the black during the 2025/26 campaign, despite the shorter playoff run.

“Pretty happy with the way we turned out financially over the past year. With not having a deep playoff run, couldn’t really ask for much more than that. Seeing that positive at the end of the year, it’s always our goal as a board not to go backwards in a year, so pretty happy with the way it turned out,” explained Team President Greg Claypool.

“Hockey-wise, I envision Trevor [Blevins] has high hopes for this year’s team, and I’m sure we’ll have another successful season this year. I’m just excited about the upcoming season.”

In total, the Mustangs saw a more than $200,000 decrease in both revenue and expenses in 2026, compared to 2025. The difference in revenue over expenses, however, was less than $3,000, as the team still came out ahead by just under $18,000.

Other changes include those on the board, as three members have stepped down while two new ones have been appointed.

Lionel Shmyr is stepping away after 15 years with the organization, 12 of which were as Governor. Connie Van Camp is also stepping down after 15 years of service, including 10 years as Treasurer. And finally, Jesiah Pask concludes five years of service on the Board of Directors, during which she mainly served as the Statistician.

The two new members to the Board of Directors are Kelly Fraser and Brittany Elder. Meanwhile, Ryan Case will remain Vice President while also stepping into the role of Governor, Jade-Emma Bishop will take on the role of Secretary, and Connie Carter will serve as Treasurer.

“[Lionel, Connie and Jesiah] have been around a long time, but Lionel and Connie are still going to be around the rink, so if we get stuck, I’m sure they’ll be willing to help us out. We’ve also got some new board members who are young people who haven’t been involved yet, so it’s always good to get new blood on the board for sure,” Claypool, who served his first year as team president, added.

“My first year was good; it was a big learning curve right off the bat, having not really been involved in the general hands-on decision-making previously, but it fell into place quickly, and having Trevor as a veteran coach and general manager definitely helped me out along the way. [Former president] Chad Elliot was around for most of the season too, so he was able to answer any questions that came up, and it was a good, successful season in my mind.”
