Four Nipawin businesses recognized at ABEX Awards

Service, retail, heritage, and agriculture.

Those are the four categories of the Nipawin and District Chamber of Commerce’s ABEX Awards that were presented on Friday, Feb. 7 as part of the chamber’s awards gala.

The winners were:

• Retail – Twisted Tree, a home decor and lifestyle department store
• Agriculture – Nipawin Farmer’s Market
• Service – Nipawin Dental Centre; taking a different approach to ensure patients are involved in their dental care
• Heritage – Nipawin Legion No. 120 and Pineland Co-op; celebrating their respective 90^th anniversaries

The chamber’s board of directors choose the winners from a list of candidates they compiled, based on the criteria they put in place. After a few meetings, the board eventually settled on the winners.

“The criteria depend on the award itself,” Incoming Chamber President Ben Paskaruk explained. “Using retail as an example, business is a part of it. However, it’s something that has separated themselves from the pack as far as what they offer the community; offering a unique product or having a unique location. That can be said for almost any of the awards. Except for perhaps the heritage award, which is more about longevity or legacy in the community.

“The criteria are wide enough that anybody who has an outstanding year or reaches any kind of significant milestone, they usually stand out from the pack.”

All winners receive a trophy to display in their respective businesses and the chamber acknowledges their accomplishments online via its website and social media platforms.
