‘I decided it was my time’: Councillor George throws name into mayoral race

The race to become mayor of Melfort now has two candidates.

Coun. Glenn George announced at the City of Melfort’s Regular Council Meeting on Monday, Feb. 10 that he would be throwing his name into the ring for mayor.

“At one time, I said I would never get into politics,” George said. “When I retired, I did, and I found that I quite like the job as councillor. I’ve been councillor for three terms now and I think I have a lot to offer.”

It’s been about 11 years on council for George and he said deciding to run for mayor came after lots of thought, but it became more than an idea over a conversation with his wife on a drive back from Arizona last year.

“She gave me a little boot,” he said. “A year and a half later, I decided it was my time.”

George has lived in Melfort most of his life, and has been in business for over 30 years. He said he wants to be a good salesman for the city.

“I love Melfort, and I just want Melfort to be better,” he said.

George said council taught him it takes a group to make a decision.

“I’ve also learned that even when I don’t agree sometimes with a decision, once a decision is made, it’s the decision of council and majority rules,” he said.

George is also a member of the Municipalities of Saskatchewan (formerly SUMA) board and said he will continue to do so if elected.

The announcement from George comes just a couple months after current Mayor Rick Lang announced he would run again back in December.

Residents go to the polls on November 9, 2020.
