SLEDDING WEEKEND

Provincial Snowmobile Festival set for end of February in Melfort

Feb 11, 2020 | 12:01 PM

The 2020 Provincial Snowmobile Festival will be hosted by the Melfort and District Trail Riders (MDTR) on Feb. 28 and 29.

The group is expecting between 250 and 270 snowmobile riders will attend.

MDTR President Doug Armstrong said with the festival being just over three weeks away, trails are in good condition.

“We could definitely use more snow but I think that is an issue pretty much everywhere in the province right now,” Armstrong said. “We have got them marked and they have been groomed and we will be grooming them again before the festival a few times but it looks decent.”

The funds raised through the weekend events will go toward equipment used to maintain the 250 kilometres of snowmobile trail in the northeast.

Registrations for riders are still being accepted with the whole weekend package available for $100 a person. The weekend includes a pizza supper, and a Saddles and Steel game show and dance on Friday. Saturday features breakfast, guided trail rides and a banquet, awards and a dance.

The banquet and dance is open to non-riders as well. All events are being held at the Kerry Vickar Centre. Banquet tickets need to be purchased in advance before Feb 17. Dance tickets will be available at the door.

Melfort hosted the festival in 2010 and 2014 when they welcomed around 270 riders and they hope to see at least that many again this year.

“Whether you are a rider or not, you can take part and it’s great entertainment this year,” Armstrong said. “We hope that people come out and support us so we can keep doing what we are doing.”

Armstrong added feedback in previous years was very positive on the events and facilities so they are optimistic for another great weekend.
