Humboldt set to host Mixed Doubles curling Provincials

Mixed Doubles curling will be on display in Humboldt this weekend at the curling club.

The Saskatchewan Mixed Doubles Provincial Championships begin on Thursday, Feb. 27, and run through Sunday, March 1.

Mixed doubles is a discipline that has started to gain traction in Canada over the last few years. It was added to the Olympics for the first time in 2018. Mixed doubles features teams of two, one man and one woman on each team. The game is more fast paced, mainly due to only five rocks being thrown per end.

Kevin Kalthoff is the Ice Technician for the Humboldt Curling Club and said mixed doubles is much different than regular curling.

“It’s curling, but it’s a completely different kind of curling,” he said. “And you almost have to call it a different sport.”

24 teams from across Saskatchewan will converge on Humboldt for the tournament, and they are split into pools of six.

The tiebreakers will take place on Saturday, and the playoffs will follow on Sunday.

Kalthoff said mixed doubles is something they’ve been trying to get started in Humboldt, and an event like this can help drum up some interest.

“If we can bring it to Humboldt and get a little bit more popularity,” Kalthoff said. “It’s just a little bit of extra involvement in our club.”

The mixed doubles provincials aren’t the only big curling event hosted in Humboldt recently. Last year the club hosted the Provincial Scotties. Kalthoff said bringing in events like that really bring some notoriety to the club.

“It’s hightened the awareness of curling in our area,” he said. “For sure.”

Day passes or full weekend passes are available for the event.
