Focusing on mental wellness in Rose Valley

The Rose Valley and District Kinettes are hosting a community Mental Wellness Day next Friday.

Chris Beaudry and Alexis Epp will bring their personal stories and experiences to the Rose Valley school from 1 to 3 p.m and then at 7 p.m. at the community hall.

The idea for the event in Rose Valley came from Beaudry’s wife Richelle who wanted to bring a full day focused on mental health to her home community.

Beaudry said he was instantly on board. He told northeastNOW relating to someone else can give the power to share.

“The best thing I can do for another person is to work on myself and helping others helps me and if both of those are true then that is an unstoppable circle of healing,” Beaudry said. “That is what I hope everyone gets from these talks.”

Beaudry was the assistant coach of the Humboldt Broncos and began doing mental health and mental wellness presentations following the Broncos bus crash in April 2018.

Beaudry said he and Epp have a unique way of running their talks.

“When we see people nodding or looking like they are tuning into what we are saying then that is how we decide what our main topic will be,” Beaudry said. “It’s interesting because then no talk is ever the same.”

The evening session in Rose Valley will also include a presentation from Dr. Jacqui Fleury from Saskatoon.

“Fleury is a naturopathic doctor that I go and see and she has an amazing keynote presentation,” Beaudry said.

These presentations are not aimed at one specific type of individual but to everyone.

“Anytime you do self-care work, it benefits everyone around you,” Beaudry said.

Thanks to the support of sponsors, the first 50 attendees in Rose Valley will win themselves a copy of MENtal health: It’s Time to Talk by Allan Kehler, and Dr. Jacqui Fleury’s book on mental health.

Beaudry will also speak to Bruno school students today for a mental health workshop through the program ‘Head Strong.’

Beaudry is also busy with his presentations that he does all over Western Canada for events similar to the one coming up in Rose Valley.

“If you have thoughts, you have mental health. If you have ever had bad thoughts, you have mental health problems,” Beaudry said.

‘Rise Together’ is a grief support group that Beaudry, his sister, and a psychiatrist created in Humboldt which has now branched out to two groups within the community and now in Melfort. Rise Together takes place at MindBody Balance Therapies at 7 p.m. on Wednesdays.

“Grief is not just the loss of a loved one but also change in a familiar pattern and if you are struggling with that sometimes just sharing with others can lift that weight off your shoulders,” Beaudry said.

All of these events are open to the public and are free of charge.
