Melfort Youth Evolution hosting virtual dance party

Mar 30, 2020 | 1:05 PM

As more events move to an online platform during social distancing, the Melfort Youth Evolution has decided to host a virtual dance party.

Youth Coordinator Kathryn Carswell said social connection during social isolation is very important for the youth of the community.

“Now more than ever, it is imperative to keep up that sense of community and we have to build that,” Carswell said.

On March 15, a SAFEtalk for youth was planned but ended up being the most recent event under the youth evolution to be cancelled.

Carswell has been working at home since the state of emergency was declared in Saskatchewan on March 16, when North East Outreach and Support Services went into their pandemic plan mode.

Since then, Carswell has been working to keep up a connection with the youth.

“It was very limited contact with the youth for the first week of isolation with one-word responses or no responses from the youth,” Carswell said.

The following week was a different story with youth wanting to join in on virtual activities such as escape rooms and planning out ideas from members.

The dance party was one of those ideas from the youth.

The official DJ for the Saskatchewan RUSH team, DJ Anchor will host the party from 8:30 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. on Friday night.

“We have room for up to 100 accounts to join in on the ZOOM app,” Carswell said.

A link will be sent to those who register with Carswell for the party at 306-921-9966 or contact Jen at 306-874-7230.

“The main goal is to get as many youths as we can up and dancing and getting endorphins into their blood stream,” Carswell said.

Anyone in the province or around the world can link in.

“There are still spots open but we have had a good response, I am impressed and excited,” she said.
