Mar 31, 2020 | 1:55 PM

There are eight new confirmed cases of COVID-19 in the province and while it’s a smaller number than in previous announcements, the Ministry of Health is advising to not become complacent with precautions.

The provincial total is now at 184 with four people in hospital. Three of those patients are receiving inpatient care in Saskatoon while one remains in an intensive care unit in Regina.

Overall, nine of the cases are the result of local transmission and the remainder are due to travel or cluster-related cases.

Ninety cases are from the Saskatoon area, 39 are from Regina, 37 are from the North, nine are from the province’s central region and three are from the Far North.

Fifty-five per cent of cases are males, while 45 per cent of cases are females.

Six of the cases are 19 and under, 83 are in the 20 to 44 age range, 64 are in the 45 to 64 range and 31 are in the 65-plus age range.

Two people have died from COVID-19 in the province.

Seven people have recovered, bringing the provincial recovery total to 21.

Up until today, there have been 10,216 tests performed for the virus, which is an increase from 475 since yesterday. Saskatchewan has the second highest rate of testing per capita among all provinces.

Stay vigilant and protect yourself

The province says the latest numbers are the lowest in a week, but are reminding the public precautions remain as important as ever.

Those who are diagnosed with the virus, travellers returning from international destinations, including the U.S. and those exposed to someone with COVID-19 must self-isolate under the current public health order.

If you disregard those reporters, health officials say it will only increase the amount of time it takes to flatten the curve and prevent further infections.

Here’s how to do your part:

  • Practice proper cough and sneezing etiquette (into the bend of your elbow);
  • Wash your hands often with soap and water;
  • If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer;
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands;
  • Maintain safe food practices;
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick;
  • Avoid unnecessary travel – inside and outside your community;
  • Gatherings of more than 10 people are prohibited and you must practice social distancing; and
  • If you experience any symptoms of COVID-19 (fever, cough or breathing issues) use the self-assessment tool at www.saskatchewan.ca/COVID19 to determine if you should contact HealthLine 811.
