The City of Melfort has reopened one of its facilities that was closed due to the COVID-19 crisis.

The Melfort Regional Landfill is once again open to the general public.

Director of Development, Planning and Community Relations Brent Lutz told northeastNOW the city has been trying to find ways to adapt to be able to provide as many services to the public as possible, while still adhering to the COVID-19 business restrictions.

“We know that the landfill is an important service to the public, and we had to find a way that we could process those transactions contact-free so that we could keep our staff safe, and so that the public could remain safe,” Lutz said.

No cash will be accepted at the landfill, and transactions will only be available through tap debit payment or on approved accounts.

Commercial account holders have been allowed into the landfill for the past few weeks. Those transactions have been able to be processed without contact. The landfill office remains closed.

The hours of operation have changed slightly.

The landfill is open from Monday to Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:15 p.m., and it will remain closed on Saturdays until further notice.

Lutz said the city is constantly looking at ways to improve services while they adapt to the changes. He said if they all able to process credit card transactions in the future, the city will let residents know.

“If the demand changes in the future, we may look at the possibility of extending our hours back to regular hours,” Lutz said.

The landfill was closed March 16 along with all other city facilities due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
