Community garden project underway in Nipawin

A community garden space is being created in the Town of Nipawin this spring.

The garden will be located at Botting Park once the snow melts. Garden boxes are currently under construction.

Parks and Recreation Director Chelsea Corrigan said Botting Park, which is also the Water Tower site, is the perfect location for the community.

“It is in the middle of town and central so it will be easily accessible for our residents and it’s just a nice area that we thought could use a community garden,” she said.

Boxes will range from 4×8 feet to 4×16 feet so the price to rent them will vary depending on size.

Besides planting and growing produce, Corrigan said the great thing about the community garden is it will be a safe activity during the COVID-19 pandemic.

“We are going to ensure that the boxes will be the mandatory distance apart from each other where our residents will be able to be separated and keep social distancing in mind,” Corrigan said.

Interest has been growing as the spring plant draws closer.

“People are excited for the boxes to be put out and participate in the program and plant vegetables that they can use for cooking and eating,” Corrigan said.

The community garden in Nipawin is a joint project between the town and the Communities in Bloom (CiB) committee.

Cib is always searching for new volunteers and anyone looking to get involved can call Corrigan at 306-577-1985 or email c.corrigan@nipawin.com.
