Nipawin Water Treatment Plant project comes in under budget, more additions upcoming

The Town of Nipawin is getting a bit more than they expected when it comes to their Water Treatment Plant project.

Initially budgeted at about $20.8 million, the project came in at about $1.6 million under budget.

“In our particular case, it’s nice to be under budget,” said Director of Works and Utilities Blaine Crowley. “But having said that, you don’t want to give money back that’s been allocated for that.”

At the regular meeting held on Monday, April 27, Council agreed to go ahead with the addition of three new wells, as well as upgrades to the raw water supply line.

“You try to stay within the budget,” Crowley told northeastNOW. “But you’re trying to spend the allocated funds as well, so it’s kind of a balancing act.”

Crowley said the additions to the treatment plant will help improve the water supply line, and help improve the potable water system as well. The wells that are being added are somewhat of a way to help prepare for the future and growth. He said currently, they have some wells that are getting older and they want to prepare for when those are at the end of their life.

“We want to make sure the raw water supply chain that we have to feed that water treatment plan is in unison with the whole process,” Crowley said.

The total cost of the new additions alone are set to be around $1.3 million and are contingent on approval from the provincial and federal governments under the NRP grant funding.

The town is hoping to have the projects tendered out sometime in May, leading to hopefully the start of construction in June.
