Tisdale Museum cancels Canada day celebrations, summer activities

May 4, 2020 | 11:13 AM

Canada Day looks to be quiet this year as the cancellation of July 1 celebrations are being announced.

According to chairman of the Tisdale Museum Calvin Farrough, this year’s events won’t be happening as they follow the public health orders in place in Saskatchewan.

“As a group of volunteers, we are being cognizant of the risks and are doing our best to abide by the rules,” Farrough said.

A typical Canada Day at the Tisdale museum begins with a pancake breakfast that normally serves between 300 and 400 people. Activities throughout the day include a car show, kid’s events, cake, a flag raising, and entertainment at the museum grounds.

The event would be well over the 10-person gathering restriction and the restriction will likely still be in place in July as no dates have been announced as part of the Re-Open Saskatchewan plan.

All activities at the museum over the summer have also been cancelled which presents challenges such as not being able to hire a summer student, if the museum remains closed to the public.

“We do have some building that we want to do in the museum itself but that is a one-person job, so we will continue on with that,” Farrough said. “Several of the activities such as maintenance on buildings will be put on hold because they involve more than one person.”

There has been no official decision made as of yet on whether Melfort will proceed with any Canada Day plans.

“We may be shutdown for this year but when things get back to normal, we will back to a normal Canada Day,” he said.
