City of Humboldt proceeding with summer capital projects

May 19, 2020 | 8:37 AM

Hard hats, reflective gear and traffic cones will still be present this summer in the City of Humboldt.

During a special meeting on May 13, Humboldt council elected to carry on with capital projects that were in the city’s 2020 budget.

“This is a good thing,” Humboldt Mayor Rob Muench said. “I know the province has indicated they want to inject a little more money in these capital projects as well. They want to kickstart the economy and I think it’s important we keep people working in the province.”

A concern for the City of Humboldt is having construction take place amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“That’s been a priority with council and staff… to make sure any of these projects that go forward this summer are following provincial guidelines. It’s taking a bit of extra planning on our part… on the contractors’ parts. When they come to do it, they’ll make sure everything is where it needs to be with provincial regulations as well,” Muench said.

Some items approved during the council meeting include:

  • nearly $100,000 to 1 Stop Playgrounds (40 per cent covered by the city and 60 per cent covered by the Humboldt Business Improvement District) for the downtown park furnishings
  • nearly $430,000 to United Paving from Swift Current for the city’s paving tender; projects include asphalt work on Seventh Street, Sixth Avenue, and Seventh Avenue
  • $153,000 to TSL Mechanical in Lanigan for the fourth lift station header replacement

Muench said the contractors will start construction in the the city in the late summer. The expectation is for paving projects to be completed within a week or two of when they start, but Muench said the hope is for the downtown park refurnishing to be completed by the fall.
