New Bylaw Officer

Town of Nipawin hires Pruden as bylaw enforcement and emergency measures officer

The Town of Nipawin has officially hired their new bylaw enforcement officer.

According to Chief Administrative Officer Barry Elliott, the town had been searching for a new bylaw officer for about a year. They had posted the job at least three times according to Elliott and have decided to hire David Pruden for the position.

Prior to Pruden’s hire, Elliott and the acting fire chief were handling bylaw operations.

“It’s been difficult and sporadic, at best,” he said. “But we’re continuing to look after bylaw issues as best we can, and with the new officer in place, this will be great to have someone to focus on that.”

Pruden is originally from British Columbia and has over 25 years of experience working in bylaw enforcement and emergency management.

“He began his career, frankly as an RCMP Officer,” Elliott told northeastNOW. “And moved from there to work as a bylaw enforcement and a youth worker as well, so he’s got a pretty good range of experiences.”

Pruden’s career has taken him from Western Canada to the territories. Elliott said bylaw enforcement is a full-time job and it will be good for the town to have someone whose role is that.

“Through patrols he’ll no doubt be able to be proactive in terms of addressing issues,” he said. “Before they become issues.”

Not only will Pruden be the bylaw enforcement officer for the Town of Nipawin, but his title will also include being the Emergency Measures Officer. Elliott said Pruden will be tasked with updating Nipawin’s emergency measure’s plan that is a bit outdated, according to Elliott.

Elliott said another aspect of Pruden’s job will be educating, whether it be the people of Nipawin, the staff, or himself with the emergency plan.

“To make sure that all of our personnel are well experienced, well oiled, and ready to go if needed,” Elliott said. “And of course we hope that never happens.”

Pruden is slated to start with the Town of Nipawin on Monday, June 1.
