Boulevard tidiness up to property owners to maintain: City of Melfort

The City of Melfort is reminding residents the boulevard around their property is their responsibility.

That means the homeowners are responsible for mowing the lawn on boulevards.

“Some of the things [property owners] are required to do is they need to keep the grass and weeds on the boulevard trimmed,” Director of Development, Planning and Community Relations Brent Lutz told northeastNOW. “They need to keep it tidy, including the sidewalk free of brush and weeds and litter.”

Shrubs on the boulevard cannot be taller than a half-metre, or one and a half feet tall, so people can get in and out of vehicles. Property owners are also required to ensure there is clearance between any shrubs and fire hydrants located on the boulevard.

Any shrubs on corner lots should also not interfere with the sight line of traffic, Lutz said, so vehicles pulling up to an intersection are able to see oncoming traffic.

Lutz said non-standard landscaping is only permitted under very specific circumstances, and residents should contact City Hall for more information. Gardens are not permitted on boulevards on the front or side of your home.

“One last thing to remember is that the trees on the city boulevards cannot be removed, pruned, or destroyed in any way without contacting the city first and getting approval for that,” Lutz said.

The regulations regarding boulevards were adopted last summer, Lutz said, adopting what was already the practice of the City of Melfort. Failure to cut the grass or trim the weeds on your boulevard could lead to a notice from the city.
