A major water line replacement in Melfort is now complete.

The project on the 700 block of Main St. started in early June.

Director of Development, Planning and Community Relations Brent Lutz told northeastNOW the contractor has completed work in the area.

“I’m sure that the businesses that were affected by the closure are really glad to see that the barricades are down,” Lutz said.

Paving in the area will take place in the coming weeks when the paving contractor is in the city.

Lutz said the water line project is one of many the city hopes to complete, if their $19 million grant request is approved. However, this particular line couldn’t wait.

“As we wait for approval for that project, this was a critical area that had been identified, and so we had chosen to proceed with this work whether or not the other project is approved,” Lutz explained.

There have been a number of water main breaks on this block of Main St. in the past, and Lutz said they have to issue a boil water advisory each time, which impacts the businesses in the area.

A number of issues affected the timeline of this project, including the wet weather of recent weeks.

“Certainly the weather wasn’t helpful, I think there was some other issues surrounding completing the work there, and it certainly took far longer than what we anticipated it would take to do,” Lutz said.
