Melfort movie theatre sets reopening date

Jul 3, 2020 | 1:00 PM

Dynasty Twin Theatres in Melfort is planning to re-open their doors next weekend after being closed since March due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Movie theatres were able to open as of June 29 as part of the Re-Open Saskatchewan plan.

Owner Corinne Pereyma told northeastNOW they will open on Friday’s and Saturday’s to begin with.

“We have the restrictions of every other row, we can’t sit in aisle seats and things like that so we won’t be able to get as many people in the theatre,” Pereyma said. “We will see, it is all very experimental right now, we are just seeing how it works.”

There will be no new release movies to show until August at the earliest.

“The first one will probably be Mulan, Tenant, and Unhinged but they keep putting the dates off because of COVID because down in the states it is still really bad and film companies have to keep putting it back,” Pereyma said.

Dynasty will follow the lead of some other theatres that are opening and will run classics at a reduced rate.

Once new releases return, the theatre would switch back to their normal, seven days a week schedule.

The theatre has an extensive list from the film companies of what movies are possible to be shown.

Examples used by Pereyma were The Goonies, A League of Their Own, and Footloose.

The theatre is continuing with popcorn sales tonight and tomorrow as well from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m.

“When people come in tonight, I will ask around and see what people might be interested in seeing on the big screen, some action and older ones,” Pereyma said.

The community of Melfort has already put their support behind the theatre with their popcorn sales on the weekends.

“A big thank-you to Melfort, they have been so wonderful to come and support us again and I want them to know that we so appreciate them,” she said.
