Nipawin Living Forestry Museum re-opening at reduced hours

Jul 13, 2020 | 5:04 PM

As museums in northeast Saskatchewan made their decisions on whether to re-open or not, the Nipawin Living Forestry Museum were one of the last to make their call.

Museums in Saskatchewan could re-open on June 29 as part of Phase four of Re-Open Saskatchewan, but the Nipawin Living Forestry Museum’s first day back will be on Thursday, July 16.

“We’re going to slowly open up and see how much traffic we get going through, to see whether it’s worth opening up a little bit more or not,” Ferd Roualt, the museum’s president told northeastNOW. “We haven’t hired any summer students, so it’ll be a little bit tougher to stay open.”

The Nipawin Living Forestry Museum typically opens to the public on May 1 but remained closed for an additional two months due to the coronavirus pandemic. Roualt said the museum’s large sources of income – Canada Day, school tours, and American tourists – are no longer an option, but the museum decided to re-open due to the number of inquires they received.

“People are still going to come park at the Regional Park,” he said. “They bring their kids around and tour the museum for a day or so. We’re going to try to be open three days a week and see what happens; if we’ll hire anybody or not.”

Features such as the steam engine and sawmill are still expected to be presented at the museum, but Roualt said they’re still figuring out how many visitors they can welcome at a singular time, as they’re on five acres of property.

The Nipawin Living Forestry Museum will be open Thursday to Saturday from noon to 5 p.m.
