Vanity Cup - COVID-19 Edition

Vanity Cup swims out of cancellation, expected to run in October

Three months after cancelling, the Nipawin “Vanity Cup” Walleye Tournaments appears to have a nibble on its line.

Registration began online on July 31, and according to one of the organizers Susan Morin, roughly 60 teams have registered for the fishing tournament set for Oct. 3 and 4 in Nipawin.

“We had a big meeting about it, weighed out the pros and cons, and came to a decision that it would be a good idea to go ahead with it,” Morin said. “When registration opened up, the entries came flying in.”

The Vanity Cup board decided to go ahead with this year’s tournament, dubbed the 2020 Vanity Cup – COVID-19 Edition, when the Government of Saskatchewan announced fishing licenses could start again during the coronavirus pandemic. Morin said three months to organize the Vanity Cup would be a big job, but she and the other organizers felt it was worth it.

Although, there will be two key differences for the 2020 Vanity Cup than in previous years. The registration banquet and awards night will not run, leaving fishers with just the tournament to compete.

Even down two extra events, and with a minimum 80 per cent pay out to the winners, Morin expects the Vanity Cup to be financially feasible if there’s remaining funds left to give for Nipawin Minor Hockey.

“We can’t go in the negative for Nipawin Minor Hockey if we go forward,” she said. “We need 73 teams to make it a go. The chances of us having to cancel that are very slim. If COVID-19 really takes off here and the government changes rules and protocols, then they may make us cancel. But as of right now it’s looking very promising.”

Safety protocols for the Vanity Cup have yet to be finalized, but Morin expects the board to figure those out within the near future.

The Vanity Cup has a grandfather system where participants in 2019 are allowed to register first but new, interested fishers can register here.
