Highway 3 Baseball League hoping to grow in Prince Albert and Northeast regions

Aug 18, 2020 | 3:00 PM

Baseball players in the northeast region may not have to travel very far for some Senior ball next season.

The Highway 3 Baseball League is looking to expand for a season in 2021. Co-Founder Adam Morrison moved to Birch Hills a few years ago and wanted to find somewhere to play baseball, but the north east and east-central regions didn’t have much in the way of that. He said talks began with someone in Prince Albert involved with minor baseball there and a few teams were started.

“This is got to be the only part of the province where Senior Men’s baseball is not a thing,” Morrison said. “So we said ‘yup, great'”

That led to a team being created in Prince Albert, and one in Birch Hills as well. Due to COVID-19 and the lack of teams elsewhere in the league, the two teams played a few exhibition games against each other and are now looking to grow the league in the Prince Albert, and northeast areas.

“You finish when you’re 18 years old, there’s nowhere for you to play anymore [in the area],” Morrison told northeastNOW. “And that’s kind of a bummer for guys who still want to play some competitive ball or something like that, so that’s what we’re hoping to get with this league.”

He said they hope to make the league good for players who might be farming, working, or going to school, but still want some baseball to play.

Currently, the North East Red Sox play out of the Saskatoon Men’s Baseball League and Morrison is hoping they join the Highway 3 League. He said contact has been made with the group. Morrison added that some players in Carrot River have also expressed interest.

Morrison said they’re hoping to get a number of teams from the north east, including places like Tisdale, and even as far as Porcupine Plain.

Anyone interested in entering a team in the league is asked to email Morrison at adamwraymorrison@gmail.com. They hope to gauge interest over the next few months and have a league meeting something over the winter months to prepare for a 2021 season.
