Rebuild year for Melfort Arts Council

Aug 27, 2020 | 3:04 PM

The Melfort Arts Council is in the midst of a rebuild year and members feel positive after hosting a recent information session.

A number of new faces have expressed interest in joining the council according to Brenda Mellon who is the chair of the Visual Arts Committee.

“It was a great opportunity to just discuss with those interested in joining, the purpose of the council and some of the activities and programs that have happened in the past,” Mellon said. “We are just really excited for the 2020/2021 year and rebuilding.”

The goal would be to get a core group of 12 to 20 people to build a new board for visual and performing arts committees.

“It also depends on the amount of involvement and how much people are really willing to contribute,” Mellon said. “Along with the board and committees, even just people to volunteer at fundraiser and certain events and programs.”

Mellon said an official date has yet to be set but an annual general meeting will be held in October.

The Melfort Arts Council has brought in art shows to the Kerry Vickar Centre in the Shervan-Smith Art Gallery. There have been adjudications in the past for shows and workshops as well that they hope to expand on in the future.

The performing arts committee is responsible for bringing in different musical acts and dramas to the CJVR performing arts theatre.

“We are just looking at rejuvenating that and continuing to bring in and expand upon the types of performances and workshops in the community,” Mellon said.

Details on the AGM will be posted on the Melfort Arts Council Facebook page where a volunteer information survey can also be found.

“This way we can gauge where people would be interested in helping and at what level,” Mellon said.

She stressed that by no means do individuals need to be an artist or entertainer to get involved.

Questions on the arts council can be directed to Mellon at 306-921-6749 or Joanne Bolen at 306-921-8287.
