Students to learn about safety on the farm virtually this year

Progressive Agriculture Safety Day put on by Safe Communities Humboldt and Area will look a little different this year but the goal remains the same.

The typical one-day event gives students information on the risks and dangers associated with the farm according to Executive Director Shari Hinz.

“There is lots of activity on the farm year-round but especially this time of year,” Hinz said. “It is one of the busiest times with respect to equipment on the roadways and in and out of farmyards.”

Around 200 students from the Muenster, Lake Lenore, Three Lakes, and Annaheim Schools will have the opportunity to take part in sessions and activities from Oct. 5 to 9.

The event is normally held in one of the schools and students from the others all attend in-person. This year, Muenster school would have played host to the safety day that would also welcome members from partner organizations that deliver educational materials.

“We kept the length of the presentations the same, similar to what they would have received in our regular one-day program but offering it over the course of the week to have a little bit of the virtual component each day,” Hinz said. “Not quite how we usually do it but I think the end result with messaging will be the same.”

The current pandemic and its restrictions have led the safety days to move to an online platform that will deliver information on eight different topics.

“Rail safety, fire safety, poison and chemical safety, water and ice safety, animal safety, 9-1-1 home safety and bicycle/pedestrian safety,” Hinz said.

Bringing the information to the rural based region for the 12th year is just as important now than ever.

“Students will be able to take away plenty of safety information to share with friends and family about how to maintain safety when they are living on the farm, working on the farm or visiting the farm,” Hinz said.

Nutrien Lanigan has been a key sponsor in the program as well as Canadian Agriculture Safety Association, and the Progressive Agriculture Foundation.
