Humboldt teacher looking to earn seat on city council

Oct 29, 2020 | 8:00 AM

A long-time teacher in Humboldt is looking to earn a seat on city council in the upcoming municipal election.

Dave Rowe is originally from Weyburn and has been teaching in Humboldt since 1997. He recently set his sights on running for council.

“A couple of years ago I thought, ‘I’m getting toward the end of my teaching career and where would I got next,'” he said. “And one of the thoughts I had was to get involved with Humboldt city council.”

Rowe has been involved in a number of groups and events during his time in Humboldt. He’s coached hockey for a number of years, has been a baseball umpire for five years, and was also on the Humboldt Minor Hockey board. In 2012, Rowe also was a volunteer with the RBC Cup when it came to Humboldt, and he also helped at the wrestling venue at the 2002 Canada Winter Games. Rowe is also a football coach at Humboldt Collegiate Institute (HCI).

“Sometimes I recognize, I think that there’s a necessity for someone to jump into the breach,” Rowe said. “And I’ve done that.”

Prior to being in Humboldt, Rowe went to the University of Saskatchewan and played football. He’s also a former air cadet and was a member of the Guard of Honour and served in the 10th Field Regiment of the Royal Canadian Artillery.

If elected, Rowe told northeastNOW he has a few things he’d like to see get done, with lots of them related to sports, recreation, and other similar activities. He said when coming to Humboldt for his job interview, there was a dance festival going on in the former live theatre that is no longer there, Rowe would like to replace that. A new midget baseball diamond is also on Rowe’s list of topics he’d like to see covered, as well as a second ice surface in Humboldt.

Rowe added he wanted to become a teacher to also be involved in sports, and he’s continued that passion by joining the hockey board, coaching, and umpiring as well.

Similar to activities in Humboldt, Rowe said he’d like to try and make Humboldt a great destination for car shows and that he’s seen what other local car shows can bring to their communities.

Topics like infrastructure are also important to Rowe, saying he wants to continue improving infrastructure in the area, and also look into traffic flow in Humboldt.

Rowe said he wants to welcome people to Humboldt, like the city welcomed him.

“As much as Humboldt has become home for me,” he said. “I want to make it home for other people, and make it really great for other people as well.”

Voters head to the polls on Nov. 9.
