Melfort Cross Country Ski Club adds golf course to trail list

Nov 23, 2020 | 5:00 PM

The Melfort Cross Country Ski Club is hoping more people in the area will get into the sport this season.

Maren Hantke is in charge of membership and says they want to get the word out that cross country skiing is a fun activity that’s available in the area.

“We exist to keep the trails groomed and ready for anybody who loves to ski,” Hantke said. “And to try to get as many people skiing as possible.”

On most years, the club will have trails groomed at Rotary Park in Melfort, the Melfort Campground, as well as some trails just north of Gronlid. However, with the help of the Melfort Golf and Country Club, they’ve added trails to the golf course for the season, giving skiers four options for trails.

Hantke told northeastNOW the idea came from another skiier and expanded from there with the help of the City of Melfort and the board at the golf course. Anyone using the course trail is asked to remain on the trails and no dogs are allowed.

Even during the COVID-19 pandemic, Hantke said cross country skiing is a great activity, and it can be done safely. She said they were able to ski a bit during the start of the pandemic in March.

“It gave us exercise and fresh air,” she said. “And we just hope that other people would catch on to it.”

The MCCSC is also looking for members, and a membership is needed to use the trails in the area. Hantke said it’s important to get a membership because the club gets grants from higher level organizations for equipment and to help groom the trails. Those interested in a membership can go to zone4.ca and search ‘Melfort Cross Country Ski Club. You can also contact Hantke at 306-752-5423. Memberships are $40 for adults and $10 for anyone under the age of 18.

Hantke also reminded people who might use the trails to use common courtesy and normal health guidelines to keep all of the trails safe.
