Melfort filled with Christmas spirit for Christmas Lights contest

The City of Melfort has no shortage of Christmas spirit this year.

The four awards have been distributed in the community Christmas lights contest that had 86 entries.

Recreation Programmer Shannon Marshall said the displays around the community are more than impressive.

“There are some great polar bear carvings out there as well as Santa doing some ice fishing so it doesn’t get more Saskatchewan than that,” Marshall said.

The official twinkle tour on Friday night offered drive-thru hot chocolate pick-up and also featured a special guest that really added to the cheer for the night.

“Mrs. Claus was so gracious to spend the evening with us and so families could take a physically distanced picture with by the tree,” Marshall said. “Santa was quite busy and we thought he would by at the workshop but later on, we heard he was out on the tour.”

About 400 cups of hot chocolate were handed out on the evening as well as around 150 tour lists.

Other highlights from the tour included some reindeer that were on the loose on Crawford Street.

The city’s top two went to 999 Melfort St. and to 413 Caskey Drive where Santa himself was outside waving to the constant flow of traffic around the block.

The People’s Choice award went to 318 Conley Street who continued to add decorations to their bright display throughout the month.

The Communities in Bloom choice went to 103 Regent Street which included a snow carving of train hauling Santa’s sleigh and gifts.

“As the contest grew, so did the prizes so what started as the top two prizes, another two were added,” Marshall said.

The twinkle tour list is still available through the city for the holiday season as well as a bingo lights card for kids.

“There was great holiday cheer throughout the entire community so we want to thank everyone that took part and everyone that helped out,” she said.
