Hope and the Future: Mayor of Humboldt looks forward to 2021

Dec 26, 2020 | 12:00 PM

The COVID-19 pandemic makes 2020 a year many may prefer to forget but there is hope for the future. We’ve decided to make that the focus of our series of end-of-year stories.

The City of Humboldt has many projects on the go for 2021 and the newly elected mayor is looking forward to seeing those go ahead.

Michael Behiel said those include water main replacements, road paving and the Centennial Park area at the Uniplex.

“We are going to start seeing so many benefits and enjoy all that Humboldt has to offer in this upcoming year and get through this pandemic together,” Behiel said.

The Centennial Park project has been 25 years in the making in a long overdue project.

“Everyone needs to stay positive and strong and consider that they are in one of the best places they can be for weathering out the pandemic,” Behiel said.

Highlights from 2020 include having another record year of low property tax increases and $4 million worth of infrastructure work while keeping the 2021 tax increase down to 1.8%, he said.

“We have to believe that the {COVID-related] restrictions in place are for the betterment of all of us and we will get through it all together soon,” he said.
