Mini Fun Camp

Mustangs holding ‘Mini Fun Camp’ for youth hockey players during school break

Feb 9, 2021 | 8:00 AM

Young hockey players in the area are getting the chance to keep working on their skills during the upcoming school break.

From Feb. 16 to 21, the Melfort Mustangs will team up with Melfort Minor Hockey and the City of Melfort to create a ‘Mini Fun Camp’ for all youth hockey players in Melfort and area.

The idea came after the city had plans to take the ice out of the Northern Lights Palace on Feb. 15. A delegation at the Feb. 1 council meeting asked the city to hold off on shutting things down and wait for more information from public health about the remainder of the 2020-2021 Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) season. The user groups then decided to set up the fun camp to help with the costs associated with the City of Melfort keeping the rink open. Since there is still hope for an SJHL season, Melfort Mustangs will also get some practice.

Mustangs head coach and general manager Trevor Blevins, Melfort Minor Hockey president Brad Hicks and Alicia Friesen will help with power skating, and will also be joined by a few current Mustang players, including Ben Tkachuk, Vaughn Holbeche and Noah Wilson.

Blevins told northeastNOW they’re going to try and keep things as fun as possible.

“The big focus will be that the participants will be working on skills when they don’t even really know they are,” he said.

Blevins added it’s great to see the groups all working together. He said they just want to be part of the solution and make keeping the rink open work for everyone involved.

“The main reason we’re doing this is so kids can stay healthy and active too,” Blevins said. “We really want to do our part.”

The sessions will be 45 minutes and the participants will be split based on age and skill level. The camp is also open to more than just Melfort Minor Hockey players, but those from outside the organization are asked to contact Blevins at 306-921-6788.

Registration is available here and cost for the camp is $60 per participant. All ages from U18 down are welcome to participate.

Blevins said the opportunity is there for more sessions to take place if there is interest and public health guidelines allow for it.
