Manitou and District Regional Park preparing for campers from in and out of province

A busy camping season lies ahead in Saskatchewan and northeastNOW is putting the spotlight on area regional parks ahead of the May long weekend.

A popular camping spot this year, similar to previous years, is the Manitou and District Regional Park.

The park is situated between the town of Watrous and the Resort Village of Manitou Beach.

Co-Manager Kathy Bergen said the park officially opened on May 1 but things really start to pick up on the May long weekend as the weather gets warmer.

“There are no restrictions as for out of province travel, so people are coming from out province to visit us,” Bergen said. “Maybe not overwhelmingly so but it is making for a busier summer.”

There are also those who are new to camping but want to stick close to home that are booking as well. Most weekends in July and each long weekend throughout the summer are pretty well booked.

There are 29 seasonal spots and people begin setting up prior to the May long weekend to get their camping season in full swing. There are a few tenting spots still available for next weekend but all sites with services are completely booked.

Last year, numbers of those heading to the regional park were down but typically the campground is full for July and August and the long weekends including May and September.

“We do always recommend reservations, (but) we will take people off the road no problem but sometimes it might be hard to squeeze them in,” Bergen said.

The healing waters of the Little Manitou Lake is one of the major attractions in the area and for those heading for a stay at the campground.

The Manitou Drive-in movie theatre is located right next door to the regional park and the golf course is just across the highway.

A new dog park can be found in Manitou Beach, and there are many walking and biking trails as well as a play area for the kids.

Manitou Beach has its own attractions to be taken in not far away from the regional park including many art galleries and antique shops, art installations such as the Manitou Reflections project and murals, the Manitou Mineral Spa and Pool, and Danceland.

July 1 celebrations are being planned along with the return of some of the regular bustle of the tourist destination.

With COVID-19 policies still in place, the regional park office is closed to the public and cash is not currently being accepted.

Gathering in campsites of more than 10 is also discouraged to abide by current public health orders.

Manitou is located 125 km southeast of Saskatoon, 165 km northwest of Regina on Highway 365, and just six km north of Watrous.
