No Fair

Melfort fair cancelled for second straight year

May 13, 2021 | 9:00 AM

For the second consecutive year, there will be no exhibition in Melfort.

The Melfort Ag Society announced on Tuesday, May 11 that there would be no Melfort fair in 2021. President Kim Eskowich said the decision was made in part due to the ongoing concerns surrounding COVID-19 as well as the fact that the midway was not going to be coming through the area this year.

“We will come back hopefully next year with a bigger and better fair,” he said. “So, it gives us another whole year to plan.”

Eskowich said financially, not having the fair two years in a row won’t be detrimental. He said while no fair means no money coming in, no fair also means much less expenses for the Ag Society.

He added that not having a fair this year is unfortunate as it brings in lots of people from out of Melfort. Eskowich said of their nearly 12,000 people that attend, over 60 per-cent of them are coming from a 40 kilometres radius from Melfort.

While there won’t be a fair taking place at the exhibition grounds, it won’t be completely quiet this summer.

“The light horse show is going to go sometime in July, they’re going to carry on with that,” Eskowich said. “And the 4-H Regional Beef Show and Sale will be happening at the beginning of July as well, so that’s all we really have right now.”

Eskowich said they’re looking at some other possible events throughout the summer.
